Can social media hurt my divorce?

If you are like most people in California, you have at least one active social media profile or account. This medium has quickly become a standard part of life for many Americans both personally and professionally. While you may be used to sharing many details of your life on these accounts, it is useful to consider what you might not want to share if you are getting divorced.

As explained by Prevention magazine, your social media posts can be seen not just by your friends or those you have connected with but possibly by the people they are connected with and even others who might be searching for you for some reason. If you have children, it is good to remember that they also might see what you post so exercising caution is very important here. For example, you know that it is advised for divorced or divorcing spouses never to speak negatively of each other to their children and this includes what you post on social media.

Remember, too, that employers today are highly likely to look up your social media accounts before considering you for a job. This does not just mean your professional social media account but your personal ones as well. Knowing this, you will want to portray yourself in a light that a potential employer would find positive.

This information is not intended to provide legal advice but is instead meant to give divorcing California residents some guidance on how they may want to use or not use social media during or after getting a divorce.
