3 tips for coping the stress of divorce

Life is messy, and when it comes to cleaning up the mess, it may involve attorneys. Divorce in California is nothing new, but it might be new to you, and the legal team at Palmer Rodak & Associates understands. We know this is an incredibly stressful experience because we have helped many clients get through the divorce process. Despite all that is on your mind, one of the most important things you can do is take care of yourself. We have included some coping strategies below to help you during this time.

The Huffington Post advises some practical methods to use when you feel overwhelmed, including taking breaks in stressful situations. You will see your soon-to-be ex-spouse while working out a divorce agreement or even in court. Take breaks when you need them and stretch your legs, go outside for some fresh air or grab something to drink. Push the reset button. Of course, if you take too many breaks that will only prolong a meeting, so be selective. If you are stuck in court and cannot take a break when you want, be sure to take advantage of them when they do come.

The divorce process can be daunting and it is easy to feel out of control. Remind yourself of your capabilities. Make an all-encompassing list of your strengths and accomplishments and keep it with you. Glance at it whenever you need a mental boost. Do not overlook important domestic accomplishments, including raising kids, balancing a budget and somehow managing to be a chauffeur, cook, cleaning person and adviser to everyone in the family.

You have heard it before, but it is worth repeating: Commit to taking care of yourself. Stress is draining and can leave you feeling spent. Make a list, this time of things you can do to pamper yourself and raise your spirits. It can include something as small as making a cup of tea for yourself or calling a friend you have not talked to in a while. Bubble baths, a round of golf, manicure or a new book or blouse are some additional ideas for giving yourself a boost. Choose something from the list regularly.

Above all, remember that you do not have to go through this process alone. Family and friends are there to lean on emotionally whenever you need them. An attorney can help you get through the legal process. For more information on how our legal team can help you, visit our webpage.
