Do I really need long-term care?

If you are planning your estate in California, you may not be considering long-term care. Many young, healthy individuals do not believe that they will be in a position where they are unable to take care of themselves, but the truth is surprising. According to the Administration on Aging, 70 percent of those who are turning 65 will need this type of assistance at some point in their lives. Another 3.6 million people under the age of 65 may need this type of care each year, meaning an accident or illness could leave you in need of long-term care at any age.

Many people believe that Medicaid or Medicare will cover all health needs once you reach a certain age, but the truth is that these programs cover a portion of the assistance but not all. The average caregiver spends 20 hours per week providing care for a disabled adult. Many also require the help of skilled nurses or therapists.

There are several options for long-term care, including moving to an assisted living facility, having care within your home or remaining in a nursing facility. The majority of long-term care patients choose to remain at home, but this fact depends on the level of care and treatments that you require.

Many who find themselves in this situation are in need of help dressing, eating, bathing and transferring to a chair or bed. Normal household responsibilities will also need to be completed. While it is impossible to know what sort of care you may need and for how long, you will need to prepare for this situation to avoid leaving heavy burdens on your family or friends.
