Handling your child's financial needs after a divorce

When California parents split up, they have to consider the welfare of their child during and after the divorce. They will need to figure out how to keep supporting their child even if they're no longer working together to raise them. They will still need to provide the child with the same quality of life they had before.

This is where child support comes in. For example, the Office of Child Support Enforcement states that there are ways for someone to use their medical work benefits for their child, even if they do not have primary custody or no longer live with or are married to their ex-spouse. The employer will be notified by the child support agencies via a National Medical Support Notice (NMSN), which must be abided by. Through this, coverage will be provided.

FindLaw focuses on the other areas that child support payments can cover. This largely includes basic necessities like water, food, and shelter. Educational expenses are also often paid for through child support, though the amount of money received via support will affect what gets prioritized. For example, extracurricular activities like fieldtrips, plays, yearbooks, and dances might take a back seat in favor of more vital things like tuition fees or textbooks.

Every child's financial needs will be different. Every parent's financial situation will be different. Accordingly, the support payment plans will differ from family to family. The plans are tailored to suit each unique situation properly in order to fund the child's expenses, ensuring they get the best possible support they can.
