How can I talk to my kids about divorce?

For Oceanside families, divorce is never an easy topic to broach. In fact, you most likely have quite a bit of trepidation regarding the issue, especially when it comes to talking with your children. While divorce almost always entails some degree of negative emotions, you can mitigate ill-effects by keeping the following advice in mind.

According to HealthyChildren.org, there are a few salient points you must emphasize when discussing divorce with your children. First and foremost, make sure they know that what is occurring has nothing to do with them. It’s important to stress that you and your ex will always love your kids, and that the problems that exist between you are not related to them in any way. Kids often internalize bad feelings between their parents, particularly in cases where parents are often in disagreement about child-rearing.

The age of your children should also determine how you speak to them about divorce. Older kids often have a better grasp on the concept, especially if they have friends whose parents are divorced. When it comes to younger children, the subject should be approached a little more delicately. In all cases it’s recommended that you do not bring up any unnecessary details, and readily express that your kids have nothing to fear in terms of the love and affection you feel towards them.

It’s also crucial that you allow your children to ask as many questions as they need to. Some children may have questions for your right away, while others might need to mull over the situation before they feel comfortable discussing it with you. Be sure to leave the lines of communication open so that your kids can bring up concerns with you as the divorce progresses.
