How can I create a co-parenting plan?

If you and your spouse are facing divorce in California, you likely have concerns about how you will manage parenting your children. In this case, developing a co-parenting plan can provide a solid framework for the long road ahead. However, what should go into a plan in order to ensure it is a success?

As illustrated by Psychology Today, the specific needs of your children should be at the core of your co-parenting plan. Needs can vary depending on things like the age of your kids, where they attend school, what type of activities they prefer and many other considerations. Any work obligations you have may also be a factor, and in this case you and your ex-spouse will need to devise a plan for navigating daily commitments.

Scheduling for your kids is another concern. To ensure there is no confusion, schedules should be laid out explicitly. This includes daily and weekly schedules, as well as schedules relating to holidays and summer vacations. Explicit scheduling is particularly important for contentious divorces. To this end, you may even consider outlining where your children will be picked up and dropped off, which can limit arguments and disagreements about the smaller details related to child rearing.

Who’s responsible for making any significant decisions should also be included in your co-parenting plan. In general, there are two types of decisions facing parents; routine daily decisions and those that have a greater impact (such as those relating to schooling or health care). You and your ex will need to come to terms with whether you’ll share in decision-making equally or if one parent will have authority.
