Explaining custody to young children

Going through divorce affects the entire family in a dramatic way. When there are minor children living at home, the change can be even more traumatic. Parents in California who are working out the logistics of child custody should take the time to consider how they will discuss the new living arrangements with their children in order to minimize the confusion and unrest they might feel.

According to KidsHealth, the process of divorce often has a profound emotional effect on children. They may feel confused, scared and angry. Sometimes these feelings result in negative behavior at school or at home. Parents who are preparing to explain the upcoming change in living arrangements with their children should react to their behavior with understanding rather than judgment and punishment. Preparing the answers to as many questions as possible before sitting down for a discussion with the children may also help. For instance, parents should have a general plan regarding the children's weekly schedules, as well as which parent will take them to their regular activities. Children may feel more stable if they know their routine will not be completely disrupted.

Parents advises divorcing couples to approach their children together. Showing cooperation between the parents may be comforting to young ones who do not understand what is happening. Since most children will be saddened to hear that they will not see both parents every day, it is important to focus their attention on the positive aspects of the arrangement. Additionally, both parents should regularly remind the children of their continuing love, even on the days when they will not be physically present.
