How can you help kids through a divorce?

If you are going through a divorce, you are likely experiencing one of the most challenging times of your life. Sadly, the difficult emotions you feel may be magnified in your children. It is often traumatic for children to see their parents split up. Fortunately, there are ways that you and other Oceanside residents might make the transition a little easier.

Kids Health points out that the way you and your ex-spouse treat each other, as well as how you approach the topic of divorce with your children, may make all the difference. When you first break the news, remember to be sensitive to how it may affect your children and tell them as gently and lovingly as possible that the marriage is ending. Children will need to be reassured that the divorce is not their fault and that both parents still love them very much.

Once you and your ex are living in separate homes and have established custody arrangements, it is important to keep things as normal as possible for the children. You may be tempted to be lax in your parenting rules because you might feel bad about the divorce, but children thrive on routine, structure and stability. They will need these things now more than ever. You and your ex should attempt to speak to each other civilly in front of the children and never make them feel like they have to take sides. Adult topics, such as child support, custody disputes and parenting disagreements should never be aired to the children.

When you and your spouse keep in mind the emotional impact that divorce has on children and consider their long-term well-being, you may stand a much better chance of helping them heal from this painful period and move on.
